A Folsom air conditioner that stops on a July afternoon often has a failed electrical part, not a dead compressor. What breaks on Folsom air conditioners, from our own invoices
Folsom cooling calls bunch into the hottest weeks: 38 of those 53 calls came in June, July and August, 21 of them in July alone. The parts that fail under that load repeat:
- Compressor motor starter. These calls usually came in as an AC not cooling or blowing lukewarm air; on one August 2026 call the compressor stopped while the outdoor fan kept running, a typical starter symptom. 14 calls, $220 to $340 since 2024 and $336 flat in 2026. - Contactor. The switch that powers the outdoor unit. Replaced on Folsom invoices for $320 and $410 in 2026; two other calls ended at the $89 diagnosis with the contactor identified.
- Refrigerant. Billed by the pound on our 2026 Folsom invoices: $159 a pound at 4 to 5 pounds, $169 to $179 a pound at 1 to 3 pounds, so a 5 pound add came to $795.
- Condenser fan motor. A 1/3 horsepower motor, special-ordered, $592 on a June 2026 call that started with a very loud noise.

Refrigerant is not fuel, so a recharge is not the repair
Refrigerant circulates in a sealed circuit and is not used up. A system that needs pounds of it has a leak, and adding more can bring cooling back for a while and leave the escape path open. Our guide to low refrigerant signs covers how a technician confirms it.
Ice on the line does not prove a leak either: restricted airflow can freeze the indoor coil, so a dirty filter or a weak blower belongs in the diagnosis first. Water around the indoor unit points somewhere else again, often a clogged condensate drain. A failed pan is another cause: one July 2026 Folsom call was a water leak at a first-floor grille, fixed with a new drain pan for $969.
Special-order parts on Folsom repairs
Some Folsom repairs wait on a part. A June 2026 warranty compressor replacement on a 4 to 5 ton system came to $2,388 and was a special order, as was the condenser fan motor above.
