Replacing an air conditioner in Folsom usually means more than the outdoor unit. Of the 11 Folsom AC replacements in Alpha Mechanical's service records since January 2024, 8 replaced the gas furnace at the same visit and 2 replaced only the cooling equipment. One paired a new AC with a wall-mount air handler so the home could keep its hydronic heat. Our system replacements run $9,500 to $25,000 (our 2026 range), set by equipment, ductwork and scope. The full service is on our AC installation and replacement page.
What our Folsom AC replacements included
The systems ran from 2.5 to 4 tons, and Trane was the most common brand across our Folsom installs, with Goodman, Rheem, Bosch and Mitsubishi on the others. Three patterns repeat:
- Repair first, then replacement. Five Folsom installs followed an earlier repair or diagnosis on the same home. Among them were a compressor found mechanically failed five days before, and a 31-year-old system whose compressor start wire burned twice in one year. A replacement is easier to weigh when the repair history is written down. Our Folsom AC repair page shows what those repairs cost.
- Two systems in one house. Three of the installs name a floor. In one home we replaced the first-floor AC and its indoor coil, then the second-floor outdoor unit, as separate jobs.
- Air on the return side. Several replacements added a new supply plenum, a high-flow return filter grille or, in one 2025 install, a new 18 inch return duct. A new AC moves only as much air as the ducts let it.
Sizing, refrigerant and the furnace question
We run a load calculation when the house, the ducts or a planned change call for it, rather than copying the old unit's size. An addition, new windows or a converted garage are common reasons. New split systems now use a lower-GWP refrigerant under the EPA's refrigerant transition; our 2025 refrigerant mandate guide explains what that changes for a homeowner keeping an older indoor coil.
If the furnace is old, replacing both at once matches the indoor coil to the furnace and puts the whole system on one install date; our Folsom furnace replacement page covers the furnace side, including the 80 and 96 percent choice. If you are also thinking about leaving gas, a heat pump does both jobs: see heat pump installation in Folsom.
Permits and the Title 24 duct test in Folsom
Folsom is an incorporated city, so an AC replacement here is permitted through the City of Folsom Building Division and its online ePermit Center, not Sacramento County. California's energy code also applies when the equipment changes on existing ducts. The ducts are tested and must leak no more than 10 percent of system airflow, or 7 percent to outside, or have every accessible leak sealed (California Energy Commission, 2025 single-family HVAC requirements). A failed test means duct sealing before the job closes, which is why it belongs in the written scope.
SMUD's heating and cooling rebate pays only for heat pumps, so a straight air conditioner earns none; our Folsom heat pump installation page lists the tiers.
