01Ductwork services

Equipment is fine.
Ducts are the problem.

Alpha Mechanical repairs, replaces and seals ductwork in Sacramento: we diagnose the duct system’s leaks, sizing and layout, then quote the repair with upfront pricing before lifting a tool. A new system tied into bad ductwork still gives you hot rooms, cold rooms, and a blower that never stops.

Duct age tracks the house. In North Highlands’ 1950s houses and the repeated 1970s layout of La Riviera’s attic-duct ranches, the runs sit above the ceiling, so a separated joint heats the attic before it heats a bedroom. On the larger parcels served by Loomis’s long attic duct runs, the length itself gives heat more places to leave. Our guide to leaky ducts in Sacramento homes covers the signs, what sealing costs and how the fix works.

Note: we don’t do duct cleaning. We handle repair, replacement, and sealing only. If you need cleaning specifically, we’ll point you to the right specialist. For whole-home air concerns, see our indoor air quality services. If the concern is the air filter, our guide on where your HVAC filter is located covers each system type and how often to change it.

02Signs your ducts need work

Hidden upstairs, but they show up everywhere.

The signs you need ductwork repair or replacement are uneven temperatures from room to room, higher energy bills, rattling or whistling ducts, and muggy or stale air. Most homeowners don’t notice duct issues until bigger problems show up.

01

Uneven temperatures

Some rooms freezing, others stifling. Almost always a duct leak, sizing issue, or disconnected run.

02

Higher energy bills

Up to 20–30% of conditioned air can leak from poorly connected ducts before it reaches the room.

03

Rattling or whistling

Loose joints or undersized returns. Sound is the duct telling you airflow isn’t balanced.

04

Muggy or stale air

Drawing humid attic or crawlspace air through duct gaps, uncomfortable and over time, corrosive.

03Three options

Repair. Replace.
Or skip the ducts.

Alpha Mechanical provides three ductwork services: duct repair, duct replacement, and ductless mini-splits for hard-to-condition rooms. We diagnose, then recommend the option that pencils long-term, not the most expensive one. Also covers residential and commercial systems up to 25 tons.

  1. Option 01

    Duct repair

Sealing, re-connecting fallen sections, replacing crushed flex runs, fixing improper supports.

  2. Option 02

    Duct replacement

When the existing system is undersized, leaking past the point of repair, or damaged by previous work.

  3. Option 03

    Ductless mini-split

Hard-to-condition rooms (additions, garages, ADUs), a single outdoor compressor + indoor head per zone.

Duct materials

What Sacramento ducts are made of, and how each one fails

Sacramento ducts are made of the three materials California's Energy Code allows: sheet metal, which fails at loose seams and take-offs; fiberglass duct board, whose tape adhesive can fail and open the seams; and flexible duct, which leaks at its connections and loses airflow when it sags, kinks or gets crushed. How each fails decides between repair, replacement and sealing.

Flexible duct

A plastic liner on a wire coil, wrapped in fiberglass insulation and an outer jacket. The run is seamless, so it leaks at the connections, and it loses airflow when it sags, kinks, gets crushed or pulls off its collar. The fix is rehanging, rerouting or replacing the run and sealing each collar with mastic.

Fiberglass duct board

Rigid sheets of resin-bonded fiberglass with a foil facing, built into boxes and trunk lines. Duct board can't be screwed together, so tape holds it, and over time that adhesive can fail and open the seams. We reseal the seams with foil tape under fiber-reinforced mastic, or replace the duct board, whichever the condition of the plenum or mixing box requires.

Sheet metal

Round or rectangular metal duct, weakest at its connections and seams, where take-offs work loose or come apart. The fix is resecuring them with sheet-metal screws, sealing with mastic and insulating bare metal in the attic.

Cloth duct tape is the wrong repair: DOE's duct repair guide calls for UL 181 mastic and foil tape, and the Energy Code bars cloth-back tape on joints unless paired with mastic and drawbands.

What Title 24 requires

When the entire duct system is new or replaced, total leakage must be at most 5% of the air handler's airflow. When equipment is replaced or altered on existing ducts, they must test at 10% total leakage or less, or 7% to outside or less, or, if neither can be met, have all accessible leaks sealed and verified (Title 24, Part 6, Section 150.2). Adding more than 25 feet of new attic duct in an existing Sacramento home (climate zone 12) requires R-8 insulation.

04What you get

Sealed ducts.
Whole system breathes better.

The benefits of sealed Sacramento ductwork are lower energy costs, healthier indoor air, quieter operation and longer system life.

  • Benefit

    Energy cost savings

Sealed, properly sized ducts deliver more of the air you’re already paying to condition.

  • Benefit

    Healthier indoor air

Fewer leaks pulling dust, allergens, and humidity from attic and crawlspace into your living areas.

  • Benefit

    Quieter operation

Properly sized returns and tight joints eliminate the rattling, whistling, and roaring of strained ductwork.

  • Benefit

    Longer system life

When ducts don’t fight the equipment, blowers and compressors don’t burn out 5 years early.
