The fix is often a single worn part. But before relighting anything, two facts matter: the safe relight procedure is printed on your own furnace, and there's one smell that means you don't relight at all — you leave.

  1. Smell first. Before touching anything, smell around the furnace, low to the floor (gas odorant can pool low). Any gas smell: stop here and go to the stop-now signals. Do not relight.
  2. Turn the pilot knob to OFF and wait at least 5 minutes for any unburned gas to clear the burner compartment.
  3. Find the pilot assembly — follow the small tube from the gas valve; the label diagram shows its position.
  4. Turn the knob to PILOT, press and hold it down to start gas flow to the pilot only, and light the pilot with a long lighter or the furnace's built-in ignitor button while holding the knob.

Why the Pilot Light Keeps Going Out

A standing pilot that repeatedly dies has a short suspect list, and the first entry explains most cases:

The thermocouple — the usual suspect. That copper probe sitting in the pilot flame is a tiny thermoelectric generator: heated by the flame, it produces a small millivolt current (Resideo's standard replacement thermocouple is rated at 30 mV) that energizes an electromagnet holding the gas valve's safety circuit open. The logic is elegant and fail-safe: flame goes out → probe cools → current stops → the valve snaps shut, so gas never flows to a pilot that isn't burning.   • You smell gas.
