What a heat pump installation costs in Sacramento
There is no single heat pump price, because there is no single heat pump. A ducted heat pump is a central system that uses your home’s existing supply and return ducts. A ductless system is an outdoor unit piped to indoor units mounted on the walls, with no ductwork at all. They are different jobs at different numbers, so we quote them as different things.

The three things that move the number
Capacity and efficiency tier. A bigger home needs more tons, and a variable-speed compressor costs more than a two-stage before any rebate is applied. SMUD pays more for the variable-speed tier, which narrows the gap rather than closing it.
What the ductwork is like. A heat pump moves more air at a lower temperature than the furnace it replaces, so undersized returns and leaking runs that a gas system tolerated become a comfort problem. Duct repairs are quoted separately and honestly.
Your electrical panel. This is the caveat nobody mentions until the estimate. Going all-electric adds load, and an older panel with no spare capacity may need upgrading before the system can be energised. We check the panel on the first visit rather than discovering it on install day.
How the rebate math works
Consider a variable-speed ducted conversion quoted inside the $9,500 to $20,000 band. SMUD’s $3,000 comes off it, and we can apply that amount up front and collect it from SMUD afterwards rather than making you wait for a cheque. GoGreen Home 0% APR financing can then spread what is left, which is financing, not a second rebate.
For market context rather than a quote, SMUD publishes medians from actual customer projects in its rebate program, refreshed quarterly: $18,804 for a gas-to-electric conversion and $17,336 for an electric-to-electric upgrade.

03When to replace
Signs you need a heat pump replacement: Your heat pump tells you when.
We’ve had customers told to “replace the heat pump!” by other contractors when all they needed were new filters. If the unit is salvageable, we’ll route you to heat pump repair instead. Before you commit, run our replacement guidelines. One sign settles it on its own: the EPA ended production and import of R-22 in 2020, so an R-22 system can only be recharged from a shrinking supply.
10–15+ years old
Heat pumps run year-round, so they wear faster than AC alone. Past 12 years in Sacramento heat is a fair signal.
Frequent service calls

06Straight answers
Repair or replace: when does a heat pump stop being worth fixing?
Three things decide it, and none of them is a sales script. First, age against the repair. For example, a compressor or coil on a unit past twelve years is money spent on a system near the end, while a capacitor or a contactor on the same unit is not. Second, refrigerant: an R-22 system cannot be recharged economically any more, and that alone often settles it. Third, what the repair does not fix. If the house has been unevenly heated for years, a new part restores the old problem rather than solving it.

How long does a Sacramento heat pump last?
Plan on ten to fifteen years here, which is shorter than a gas furnace. The reason is simple. A heat pump is the heating system and the cooling system, so it runs through a Sacramento July as well as a January cold snap. The unit accumulates roughly twice the run hours a furnace does over the same calendar.
What lengthens it is unglamorous. Clean coils, filters changed on a schedule rather than when airflow drops, correct refrigerant charge, and a condenser that is not packed in by shrubs. Two maintenance visits a year is what the manufacturer warranty usually expects, and skipping them is the most common way a system reaches year eight looking like year thirteen.

08Where we install
Your utility decides the rebate, not your city limits
We install heat pumps across Fair Oaks, Carmichael, Arden-Arcade, Rancho Cordova, Folsom, La Riviera and El Dorado Hills. The equipment conversation is the same at every address. What changes is the meter. SMUD serves most of Sacramento County, so a gas-to-electric conversion in Carmichael or Arden-Arcade is usually straightforward rebate territory, while parts of Roseville and the eastern edge of the county sit with a different utility on a different programme.
